March 28 & April 4, 2020 workshops postponed

Health officials are advising all of us to escalate social distancing in order to limit the spread of the coronavirus and reduce the likelihood of overwhelming our healthcare systems. Additionally, Richmond Hill, our host for these workshops, has announced it is closing to outside guests and groups through at least March 25. Therefore, we have decided is it in the best interest of our community and for everyone’s health and well-being to postpone the March 28 and April 4 Living the Pledge workshop.

We will work to reschedule them for later in the spring and will be in touch with all registrants as to their options once those dates are set. Know that we do have workshops scheduled for August 8 & 22, 2020 and October 10 & 24, 2020 at First Unitarian Universalist, 1000 Blanton Ave. Registration will begin in early summer.

We are disappointed at not being able to offer this training to you at this time, but are excited about your interest in working to end racism. We need anti-racists to help fight racism in all its forms.

Two more opportunities in 2019 to commit to Living the Pledge to End Racism
We’re offering two more opportunities in 2019 for you to participate in a Living the Richmond Pledge to end Racism Workshop, August 3 and 17, and November 2 and 16, 2019. (Note: you must attend both days of the workshop you register for. To promote trust-building within your small group, you cannot attend one day in August and one in November).

“But I already know all about racism, so why should I participate,” you might ask? Because by participating in a Living the Pledge workshop,
- You are joining a community of people in Greater Richmond and beyond who are committed to working to end racism.
- You are taking an important step toward becoming an anti-racist leader.
- You are renewing your commitment to doing the work to end racism, to having the difficult conversations, to actively working to overturn racist laws and policies, to bridging the divide that exists among people from different cultural groups, and so much more.
Take the first, or next, step. Join with us to ending racism in the Greater Richmond region and throughout the country. Together, we can do this!

In 2019, we will end racism!
Yes, we know it isn’t a realistic goal to end racism in this coming year, but with this vision and your commitment, together we can make it clear that racism in all its forms is unacceptable in the Greater Richmond area. It starts with making a pledge about what you

will do in the next year.

To help you define your personal commitment, we will be offering two Living the Pledge Workshops in the first quarter of 2019:
- January 19 and 26, 2019, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Glen Allen, 11105 Cauthorne Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23059.
- March 2 and 16, 2019, 9:15 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. at First Unitarian Universalist Church 1000 Blanton Avenue, Richmond, VA 23221.

- Recognize and challenge systemic racism;
- Confront racism and bias in our everyday lives, and
- Take leadership in ending racism in our community, our culture, and our lives.
As part of the workshop, participants develop a community of support and an understanding of how to use support in deepening our work in building a just and equitable multicultural world.

The only way to end racism is for people to come together and demand equity and justice for all. Join us today.

Regional Chalice Lighter call supports the Pledge to End Racism

We’re thrilled to announce that the first regional Chalice Lighters call in the Unitarian Universalist Association Southern Region is to support extending the Pledge to End Racism program from First UU Church of Richmond to all interested congregations in the Southern Region.

This program is designed using a leadership development model so participants gain skills and develop competence in not only talking about racism, but in facilitating discussions about race, and then working together to organize Living the Pledge workshops for people throughout their community. Instead of just talking about racism, this program develops knowledgeable, passionate leaders who can do something to address it. The Pledge strengthens local antiracism efforts, brings congregations together with other faith communities with like commitments, and creates teams of people involved on the local level in making change in their own communities.

With generous donations from Southern Region Chalice Lighters, the Pledge to End Racism organizers will be available to provide, at minimal cost, curriculum and consultation to fifty (50) or more congregations in organizing the Pledge to End Racism programs for their communities. This will include all the materials to develop Living the Pledge to End Racism workshops, select and train small group facilitators, and promote the program in your congregation and to your larger community – all with the goal of building a community-wide movement to end racism.

By spreading the Pledge to End Racism program throughout the South, Unitarian Universalist congregations can have a recognizable impact on the rise in racial tensions and division and can play an essential part in building stronger communities imbued with justice, equity, and compassion.
