Curricula

Episcopal: Sacred Ground

Sacred Ground is a film- and readings-based dialogue series on race, grounded in faith.  Small groups are invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race and racism, while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity.

The 10-part series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories.

Sacred Ground is part of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.  This series is open to all, and especially designed to help white people talk with other white people.  Participants are invited to peel away the layers that have contributed to the challenges and divides of the present day – all while grounded in our call to faith, hope and love.

United Church of Christ: Sacred Conversations to End Racism

In 2018, Sacred Conversations to End Racism (SC2ER), a Restorative Racial Justice Journey curriculum, was created to address and dismantle racism within the Christian Church and society. The study guide and resources offer lessons to dispel myths of white skin and dominant culture supremacy. SC2ER seeks to acknowledge the historical development of humanity being separated and assigned into hierarchical categories based on skin color.

Sacred Conversations to End Racism includes restorative racial justice resources as a corrective to the historical and contemporary harm, injury, and trauma enacted upon non-European descendants. The ongoing impact of racism and xenophobia in contemporary society requires Christians to commit to a journey of restoration and repair among God’s people impacted by individual and systemic oppression and marginalization.

There are three Journey Modules requiring an 8-to-10 week time commitment per Module. The SC2ER study guide is not a self-guided resource. SC2ER requires training from restorative racial justice practitioners.

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: Troubling the Waters for the Healing of the Church

Troubling the Waters for Healing of the Church is a resource that is developed specifically for White congregational members and others to help them understand the role that White privilege and internalized White superiority has had in shaping their own attitudes, belief systems, cultures, and those of the church and society at large. This resource has been designed by White people for White people to equip them with tools that will aid them in addressing and breaking the cycle of socialization that perpetuates racism and sustains an exclusive church. The resource will help White congregational members or groups to embark on a journey of learning from one another as well as from people of color who may enter the river of conversations with them as time goes on. The resource is broken down into 18 sessions starting with the Advent season and ending with Pentecost.

The Center for Faith, Justice, and Reconciliation is a community of scholars, faith leaders, organizers, and citizens dedicated to being and building a beloved community in Virginia and beyond. Recognizing the ongoing crisis in our nation and world, the Center embarks on a bold journey of living faith, advancing justice, and building sustainable paths for authentic reconciliation and community.

Anti-Racism as a Spiritual Practice (ongoing video series) “We believe that racial justice work is as much about inner excavation as it is about social activism. This show aims to facilitate both. In each episode, we will bring in an expert to speak about a particular aspect of racism, their own experiences with it, and what wisdom they can offer as we all seek to navigate these in our own lives and communities.”

I recently purchased this series from Arrabon – a nonprofit Christian Organization: Race, Class, and the Kingdom of God study series for $37 in a downloadable format.  And the Koinonia School of Race and Justice at Richmond Hill has Anti-Racism programs that I’ve taken. ~ Deborah
