  • Speak Up! & Dwelling Tour

    Speak Up! & Dwelling Tour

The Richmond Pledge to End Racism is hosting an in-person half-day retreat at Richmond Hill on March 23, 2024, 9am – 1pm. There is no cost to attend but space is limited and registration is required..

The retreat will consist primarily of two parts:

    • A tour and discussion of Richmond Hill’s Dwelling of Enslaved Africans and “Transcending Walls” mural
    • Speak Up! practice in small groups with brand new scenarios

We will gather at 9am at Richmond Hill (2209 E Grace St) and begin the tour promptly at 9:15am.  Our tour guide is Dr. Lauranett Lee, Social Justice Coordinator for Richmond Hill, American historian, educator, author, and the founding curator for African American History at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture.

Together, the Dwelling and Wall tell a powerful story — one of reckoning with the history of the land we live on as we imagine a future of justice and peace.

Following the hour-long tour, we will have an opportunity to debrief and then move into small groups for Speak Up! where we will use role playing as a tool to help us practice speaking up to bigotry with real-world scenarios. The Speak Up! practice will be facilitated by Wendy DeGroat and Nikki Rovner.

Stopping everyday bigotry starts with speaking up when you hear it – and speaking up is a lot easier if you can practice in a safe space with people who are committed to building a community that is more inclusive and welcoming.

We will conclude our morning together with some personal reflection time and then lunch at Richmond Hill.  After lunch, you are welcome to depart or may chose to stay at Richmond Hill to continue to reflect on the experience.

    Hope you can join us!
